When pigeons have taken over the balcony

Tall societies give birds what they want: ledges, ducts, AC units and balconies that stay dry in the rain. A few visits turn into a regular spot, and soon you are cleaning droppings every morning. Those droppings make a mess and spoil what is kept there, and birds can spread disease. Nests can also block drains and openings.

A bird that has nested on your balcony will return to it, however often you scrub the floor. You have to close the space off, and a net does that.

• Will a net hurt the pigeons?

  No. It is a barrier, and its job is to stop birds landing there, so they simply go elsewhere. The one thing to watch for is a bird or chicks already inside. So tell us if there is a nest, and nothing gets closed in behind the net.

• Which material is your bird net made of?

  The technician suggests the net at the site visit, because it depends on the area and how exposed it is. Ask at the visit what the net is made of and how long you can expect it to last, and you will have the answer before you agree to anything.

• Will a net spoil my balcony view?

  You will see it when you stand close to it, there is no point saying otherwise. How much it bothers you depends on the balcony and what you look out at. If the view is a big thing for you, say so when the technician comes, and ask how it will look.

• Does my Kharghar society have to allow bird netting?

  Some societies have rules about anything fixed to the building's outer wall, so ask your committee first. It can save trouble later. If a few neighbours or a whole wing have the same pigeon problem, the committee could ask us to look at all of them in one go.

• Can you net ducts and AC ledges too?

  If birds are getting in there and it can be reached safely, it can usually be netted. So on the day of the visit, walk the technician around everything, including the duct, any ledge and the AC unit outside, and then all of it can go into one quote.

• Why not just keep cleaning the balcony?

  You can, but you will be cleaning for as long as you live there, because birds go back to a place they think of as safe. The droppings and nests also spoil what you keep outside, and birds can spread disease. A net takes that place away from them, gently.

• What happens at the bird netting site visit?

  Someone trained walks through the balcony or duct with you and tells you which net would work. Point out every place that bothers you, and ask how it will look when it is up. You will get a price after that, and you do not have to say yes on the spot.

• Should I remove a pigeon nest myself before the net goes up?

  Please leave it until you have spoken to us, mainly if there are eggs or chicks. Show it at the site visit, so we can work out what to do about it. When you do clean up droppings, wear gloves and a mask, and wash your hands well afterwards.

• Can I book bird netting together with pest control?

  You can ask for both on the same call. Netting usually needs its own visit first, but if that balcony has spiders or lizards as well, the technician can look at those while there. We will tell you if the jobs need separate days, so you can plan for it.
