How they got into your flat

Having bed bugs does not mean your home is dirty. They travel. They come in suitcases, second-hand beds, a friend's overnight bag or the furniture a new flatmate brings. Rented flats and shared rooms see more of this, simply because more people and belongings move in and out.

Once they are inside, they spread to the next room and sometimes the next flat through wall gaps or on furniture being moved. They can live for up to a year without feeding in cool conditions, so a room that has stayed locked is not automatically clear.

Why the shop spray let you down

A spray from the shop kills the bugs it touches, and that is about it. The ones inside the sofa, behind the skirting and in the bed joints carry on, and eggs usually survive. So the bites stop for a few days and then come back.

It can also push bugs into the next room, which makes the later job bigger. A proper treatment goes after all the hiding places, not only the mattress, and it is timed to catch the ones that hatch afterwards.

Getting the room ready

• Take off all the bedding, wash it at 60°C or above, and keep it sealed in plastic bags.
• Move the bed and other furniture away from the wall, and open up the bed frame if you can.
• Clear out clothes, personal things and electronics as the technician tells you.
• Do not shift things into another room before the visit, because that spreads the bugs.

• What does bed bug treatment cost in a Kharghar flat?

  It starts at ₹3,000. One or two rooms with chemical treatment cost less than a whole flat with heat. The technician checks how far they have spread and then gives you the figure in writing. The inspection is free, and you do not have to book afterwards.

• Why do you come back after 15 to 21 days?

  Eggs can survive chemical treatment and hatch later. Coming back after 15 to 21 days catches those new bugs before they are old enough to lay their own eggs. If you had heat treatment, which also kills eggs, the return visit is mainly to check that the job has worked.

• When can I sleep in the bed again?

  Ask the technician, because it depends on the method and the product. After heat treatment the room has to cool down first, but there is no chemical to dry. After chemical treatment, you will be told which rooms to keep clear and for how long. Please follow that.

• Do I need a new mattress?

  The heat is raised slowly and held at 50 to 60°C, which ordinary furniture can take. Some things should go out first, such as medicines, candles, aerosol cans and some electronics. The technician will give you a list at the inspection, so you have time before the treatment day.

• Can I clean bed bugs out of a mattress on my own?

  You can wash the bedding and vacuum the seams, and that does help. It will not finish the job, though, because bugs also sit in the frame, nearby furniture and the walls. If you are still getting bitten after a week, it is time to have the whole room looked at.

• How long will my flat be out of use for heat treatment?

  Plan for most of a day. The heat is held for 4 to 6 hours, with time on either side to set up and let the room cool. Chemical treatment is shorter, about 2 to 4 hours per room. You will get a timing for your flat after the inspection.
